Number 13. I’m always surprised how far onto the ice some of these animals can get. This rescue includes two photos. The rescue effort and the shore portion of the incident. What a really cool look back into the past.

ACME Newspictures- Chicago Bureau dated February 7, 1940 Title: Ferdinand Breaks The Ice

“St. Louis, MO- Ferdinand, the steer, after escaping from a truck driver, started on a tour of St. Louis, MO., until he came to an ice covered stone quarry and crashed into water 250 feet deep. He was rescued by Humane Society Officers and Firemen who used ladders laid along the ice to reach the animal. Photo 1, Humane Officer George Partney and Lt. Thomas Carton of the fire department throwing a rope around Ferdinand’s neck. Photo 2, Ferdinand safe and sound after he was pulled out of the ice water.”
