Animal Rescue- A Photographic History Vol. 1 No. 1

Animal Rescue League postcard c.1940
SPCA Begins Animal Rescue Service April 29, 1963

Welcome to the first post in the series Animal Rescue- A Photographic History. Currently we have enough images in the collection to post twice a month for the next year. During that time we will be searching for new images to add to the collection. If you would like to contribute a photo or know of one we could purchase please contact us to let us know the details.

I thought I should start the first post with a humorous and a regular image. The first image in postcard form is from the Animal Rescue League dated 1940. The image content says it all. Have to love those kitty cats.

The second image is on page two of the album. What better way I thought than an image of an old rescue truck. This image reminds me of a photo I have from our families food truck business where there are eight of those VW’s sitting in front of their operations base around the same year.

The rescue truck photo was taken by Ed Valdez, April 29, 1963. Titled: SPCA Begins Animal Rescue Service “The Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 519 Sacks St., has added an animal rescue unit to its service. Carl Turner, an SPCA driver, shows off the truck and some of the equipment that will enable him to coax cats down from trees and take injured animals to the veterinarian. Jerrol P. Lowe, manager of the SPCA, said the truck will be used to pick up injured animals and rescue animals in troublesome situations. He said the new service was badly needed.”
